The bleak Hollywood environment offers a lot of promise for an evocative horror picture, as demonstrated by Moloch. Unfortunately, the potential mood is spoiled by several loose ends, an overabundance of fog machines, and misplaced shocks. Moloch works far better as a family drama; the picture is at its best when Betriek and her family are together. The language and tension in Betriek and her parents’ relationship soar above everything else, thanks in part to a magnificent performance by Jack Wouterse, but it’s a shame that every other tension needs to be sacrificed for that.
